A Hailstone sequence is one of the world’s unsolved problems in mathematics.  The sequence is called this because the numerals go up and down, like this –

20 – 10 – 5 – 16 – 8 – 4 – 2 – 1.

15 – 46 – 23 – 70 – 35 – 106 – 53 – 160 – 80 – 40 – 20 – 10 – 5 – 16 – 8 – 4 – 2 – 1

In mathematics people make conjecture it is an idea that you think might be true but you do not know for sure.  Conjectures are very important in mathematics and it is really good for students to make conjectures.

Can you work out the rules that the Hailstone sequence follows?  We will be looking at this next Thursday in class….call this a head start 🙂

Have fun!!!!!!!
